It is one of the biggest events in the Cricket calendar and this year the winner of the Ashes will take the lead in overall victories. Out of the previous 69 Ashes series, both England and Australia have won the urn 32 times, with the other 5 times ending in draws.
Despite both teams having won the series the same number of times, it is Australia who have been the more dominant which is why the cricket odds for this year favours them. The Aussies have won 130 of the 325 test matches while England trail them with only 106 test wins. There have been a large number of draws, with 89 of those 325 test matches ending with both teams even. It is no surprise then that the bookies are backing Australia to win the series and reclaim the urn that they lost in the 2015 series.
England have only managed to secure a whitewash once, back in 1886, winning the series 3-0, while Australia have managed to win 5-0 three times; in the 1920/21 series, 2006/07 and most recently in the 2013/14 series. England will be hoping to avoid making it a fourth time of being embarrassed by their rivals.
The England Ashes squad was announced back in September although Ben Stokes has since been removed and Captain Joe Root will be hoping that he can guide his country to retaining the Ashes despite their underdog status. It will fall to the more experienced players like Stuart Broad and Alastair Cook to help the less experienced squad members to play at their very best.
The Australian squad that was announced shocked many fans as it was seen as being weaker than expected, they are still favourites to win the series. Playing on home soil will certainly help the Aussies in their bid to win their 33 rd Ashes series.
