So Manchester United are apparently on a title charge (though this has rightly been tempered by their draw at Villa Park in their last match), well for me the reds of Manchester have to focus on making sure they make the top four (after spending 150m+ in the summer anything else is failure). Its far too early to say they are definitely in the title race or not – let me explain. Yes they lead the chasing pack to Chelsea and Manchester City and if you look at the numbers (and the fact that they have to play their rivals above them) they can win the Premier League and like Liverpool last season with no European involvement the time is there to hone specific tactics on the training pitch . However despite their current form they have not looked convincing and if they had lost games no one would have been surprised (big thanks David de Gea is being said a lot after matches in their dressing room I suspect). Personally the judgement can only be made on Man United as genuine title challengers once we reach the next international break in March. Their last game before that is Liverpool at Anfield, if they can do to them what Liverpool did to them at around the same time last season and if this puts them right in the mix then you never know.
ps most people will probably have Louis Van Gaal’s lowest moment as United manager being the 5-3 defeat to Leicester where they lost a 1-3 lead partly due to poor officiating and a shocking collapse by the team, however for me one result has been largely forgotten. On August 26th an admittedly youthful (but still boasting a number of full internationals) Man Utd team were humbled by the MK Dons (of League One) 4-0 in the 2nd round of the Capital One Cup. On January 4th after a very busy Christmas period LVG faces his first ever FA Cup match against Yeovil Town at Huish Park and lets be honest The Glovers have nothing lose and will be chomping at the bit to cause a massive upset like the Dons did. No matter where the reds of Manchester are in the league another cup defeat to a League One side will not look or be good for the club, manager or players – concentration and game heads on (from the off) will be needed.
I’m no boxing expert but I’m going for it with comment on Amir Khan. After his 2004 Olympic silver medal the world was his oyster and a number of easy wins at Lightweight followed in the infancy of his professional career. However a 1st round KO by Breidis Prescott brought up suggestions he had a glass chin and that the first difficult fight faced, he was not up to it. A move to Light Welterweight heralded a bit of a renaissance, with the picking up and retention of the WBA Light Welterweight title, he even added the IBF title on top of this and talk of a potential future fight with the main man Floyd Mayweather Jr being mooted. However back to back defeats to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia again brought up the suspicion that at the highest level, the Bolton fighter was found wanting and would never reach the heights of the greatest fighters. Khan knew himself that he was in the last chance saloon – now moving up to Welterweight, his new found determination was in force when he survived a knockdown against Julio Diaz to go on and win the fight with a unanimous decision. His latest fight (13th December 2014) was against Devon Alexander (a retention of the WBC Silver Welterweight title he had attained in his previous fight) which he dealt with professionally and another UD was achieved. For me Khan deserves massive credit for coming back twice from huge defeats – he may not necessarily be in Mayweather Jr thoughts just yet but if he continues to improve at this level and most importantly keeps winning the ‘Pretty Boy’ may just have to sit up and take notice – watch this space.
Right the FIFA INDEPENDENT ethics investigator who wrote the report around potential corruption during the bidding for World Cups 2018 and 2022 has resigned after criticism of his report from a FIFA ethics judge – surprise surprise NOT!!!!!!! (YOU COULDNT MAKE THIS UP – OH HANG ON ITS FIFA!!!!!!!!! . If anyone actually thinks the body that runs football is fair and transparent I have three words for these peeps – MORE FOOL YOU!!!!!!! Its now (and always been in my opinion) a JOKE – jobs for the boys organisation run by a clown who just loves to keep hold of the power. Unfortunately (lest amazing that he is being allowed!!!!!!!) Sepp Blatter is running again to be president next year (come on Jerome Champagne I say). Tells you all you need to know and something I have known for sometime – putting it diplomatically – SOMETHING IS AMISS AT FIFA.
