The Dragons v The Red Devils for a place in the semi-finals it is.
So the Welsh fairytale continues. Northern Ireland were actually the better team in their round of 16 clash, but they never really carved out any clear cut opportunities. Wales on the other hand were not great but they had the quality to fashion some decent chances and eventually this told when Gareth Bale whipped in a fantastic ball across the area, one veteran defender Gareth McCauley had to go for it or a Welsh player behind him would have tapped it in, unfortunately he could only divert it past his own keeper. A cruel way for Northern Ireland to lose the match, but that’s football at times. So the dragon’s fire is still breathing and just as in their only other major tournament appearance they have made it to the quarter finals. but the plan is to now make even more history by getting to the last 4.
Unfortunately for the Welsh, Belgium have now decided to arrive properly at this tournament. I wrote in an earlier blog about how their manager Marc Wilmots wasn’t getting a tune out of his plethora of stars, but huge credit to him for turning things around after defeat to Italy in the their opening match. Hungary were spirited opposition to the Red Devils in their round of 16 clash, but from the off you sensed the Belgian’s meant business, especially Eden Hazard who was outstanding. Belgium got the early goal then spurned a number of chances, which whilst it was only 0-1, the Hungarians were always in the game but whilst they were trying to get equaliser they left too much space behind their midfield and the Belgian’s punished them. The game ended 0-4 in the end which was hard on Bernd Storck’s side, but showed what Wilmot’s team are capable of when on song. They are now warming up very nicely and will fancy their chances to progress further.
Ok, this one is going to be interesting. Wales and Belgium were in the same qualifying group so know each other well, there will be no surprises. The Welsh had the upper hand drawing in Brussels 0-0 and winning 1-0 at home. I think Belgium have hit form and they will want revenge for the qualifying results. You can get at the Belgian defence, but I think you can also get at the Welsh defence and the attacking options of Belgium are far deeper. 1-3 to the Belgian Red Devils.
