It is 2 from 3 in Group E, only Costa Rica cannot qualify. For that reason plus other external factors – I can only see a Switzerland victory, which could possibly see them top the group after their draw against Brazil and then German referee and German led VAR assisted victory over Serbia. Swiss born FIFA President Gianni Infantino and his predecessor, Sepp Blatter  will have been delighted with what has gone on so far. That leaves Serbia and Brazil in a shootout for one place. The Serbians were cheated against the Swiss and will feel some injustice, but Brazil are not a team to give mercy and after two matches where they have struggled to find some fluency in their game, especially a returning from injury Neymar,  they seemed to be getting it together as they pounced late to see off Costa Rica. The 5 time champions will prevail and move menacingly into the knockout phase, whether they finish first or second, we will have to wait and see.

As for Group F – it has gone down to the wire, big time. The dramatic late winner (a wonder strike freekick) from Toni Kroos for his 10 man team against Sweden basically saved them from a delayed exit of this tournament. Thoughts of John Guidetti, who seconds before the winning free kick was given away, foolishly shot instead of squaring it to an unmarked teammate who could then have actually put Germany out of the World Cup there and then. The Germans will beat South Korea after being on the brink of elimination, whereas I feel Sweden have now lost their chance and will struggle against Mexico. Small margins and survival of the fittest and that most definitely includes Joachim Low’s side, something you just have to admire whether you like them or not.

Predictions for Wednesday 27th June

South Korea 0 Germany 3

Mexico 2 Sweden 0

Serbia 0 Brazil 3

Switzerland 1 Costa Rica 0
