SHOOTOUT IN SAMARA – 25TH JUNE PREDICTIONS – GROUP A AND B FINALE

So Group A is done and dusted, we know the qualifiers, just not the position in the table. Russia ahead on goal difference as we stand. Their meeting in Samara will settle the situation. It will be interesting to see how this game goes. I’m personally surprised that the hosts group is completed before they find who their opponents would be from Group B. Hopefully as both teams are through we will get a free flowing game. Uruguay are clearly the better team and I would expect them to prevail, they will have to if they want to win the group. I expect Egypt will finish their, ultimately disappointing campaign, with victory over whipping boys Saudi Arabia.

Group B a bit trickier, though the big hitters of Spain and Portugal are in pole position. The Spaniards top, only because they have one yellow card less. I can see Spain winning against a Morocco side who, whilst already having been eliminated from the competition, will want to leave the World Cup with something (even if it is just a goal) as they have been very unfortunate to have lost both their games. Portugal v Iran is the key match, Carlos Queiroz’s side have been a breath of fresh air and will probably get the neutrals vote, but Portugal, whilst not great on the eye are a solid unit and when you have some bloke called Cristiano Ronaldo as your stardust it means that you will always have a chance. The European Champions will find a way to get over the line.

Predictions for Monday 25th June

Uruguay 1 Russia 0

Saudi Arabia 0 Egypt 3

Spain 3 Morocco 1

Iran 0 Portugal 2
